Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva
Luiz Incio Lula da Silva Free Online Research Papers Luiz Incio Lula da Silva created change in Brazil in many positive ways. Before his term in office as the president of Brazil, Lula was elected as president of the Steel workers Union of So Bernardo do Campo and Diadema. He organized many major events including strikes during his time as president for the Steel Workers Union. Luiz had then become a congress member. This was his chance to prove to the people he was able to be a helpful asset to them. During his term in congress he strongly supported the workers class movement. Since Lula has been president, he has accomplished many goals. To fully understand his impact on Brazil, it is important to go over his life accomplishments. In 1975 Lula was elected as president of the Steel Workers Union of So Bernardo do Campo and Diadema. During his time in office for the Steel Workers Union he was responsible for the organizations for strikes and many other activities. Lula was arrested shortly after the strikes began. He later spent around a month in jail, but then was release due to protests. Lula had been the President of the Central ÃÅ¡nica dos Trabalhadores for many years after. This was a union federation that is influenced by the Partido dos Trabalhadores. This affected his process in which he was to become the president of Brazil in a very positive way. He was already known for his leadership and willingness to get things accomplished; clearly this meant that he would benefit the people of Brazil. During Lulaââ¬â¢s political career in the early 90ââ¬â¢s he joined a campaign that was for the impeachment of the president Fernando Collor de Mello. This was because he wanted to help get Fernando impeached after there had been a series of scandals involving public funds. After many years Fernando had returned to the senate. Because of this Lula had then brought him into his ââ¬Å"allied baseâ⬠. This ââ¬Å"allied baseâ⬠was a group of parties of politicians that Lula had attacked politically before his election to the presidency of Brazil. Also during his political career Lula first ran for an office in the early 80ââ¬â¢s. He ran for the state government of So Paulo. Lula lost this election, but this was not the last time he would run for office. Shortly after his loss he won a seat in congress that gave him another step towards the presidency. In the late 80ââ¬â¢sââ¬â¢ still in congress Lula decided to run for the PT presidential candidate. His party was formed and is known as ââ¬Å"loose confederacy of trade unionists, grassroots activists, left-wing Catholics, left-center social democrats, and small Trotskyist grouping. Lulaââ¬â¢s party earned him the distrust of ââ¬Å"better-off Braziliansâ⬠. This was because of the ability of the PT to have presented its self as a working class mass movement organized as grassroots. Since Lula had been involved in the Workers Class Party he had decided not to run in the re-election as congressman. Instead he decided to run for president in 1994 and 1998. In 1994 he lost to the former ex-minister of Finance, Fernando Cardoso. He also lost the election in 1998. Finally, in 2003 Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva was elected president of Brazil, defeating Jose Serra. During his presidency, Lula has done many social projects and received many awards. Since being elected, Lula has put social programs at the top of his to-do list. Lulaââ¬â¢s main project has been to eradicate hunger. This program brings together a series of programs with the goal to end hunger in Brazil. The creation of water cisterns in Brazils semi-arid region of Serto. Also actions to counter juvenile pregnancy, to strengthen family agriculture, to distribute a minimum amount of cash to the poor, and many others. In March 2006, The Economist wrote that ââ¬Å"Lula has a pragmatic foreign policy, seeing himself as a negotiator, not an ideologue. As a result, he has befriended both Venezuelan President Hugo Chvez and former U.S. President George W. Bush.â⬠Leading a large and competitive agricultural state, Lula generally opposes and criticizes farm subsidies. During the Lula administration, Brazilian foreign trade has dramatically increased, changing from deficits to seve ral surpluses since 2003. In 2004 the surplus reached $29 billion due to a substantial increase in global demand for commodities. Brazil has also provided UN peace-keeping troops and leads a peace-keeping mission in Haiti. Another major goal of Lulas foreign policy has been for the country to gain a seat as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council. So far the attempts have been unsuccessful.(3) Since Lula has been President of Brazil, he has received numerous medals. Some of these include the Brazilian Order of Merit, the Brazilian Orders of Military, Naval and Aeronautical Merit, the Brazilian Order of Scientific Merit, the Norwegian Order of Royal Merit the Mexican Order of the Aztec Eagle and the Order of the Southern Cross. He has also received the Prince of Asturias Award for International Cooperation in 2003 and was the chief guest at Indias Republic Day celebration in 2004. Next, in December 2008, Lula was named the 18th most important person in the world by Newsweek magazine. He was the only Latin American person featured in a list of 50 most influential World leaders. In 2009, Lula was chosen as the Man of the Year by two European newspapers El Paà s and Le Monde. The Financial Times ranks Lula among the 50 faces that shaped the 2000ââ¬â¢s. In conclusion, one can see Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is a very important figure in Brazil. From Lulaââ¬â¢s early days as president of the Steel workers Union of So Bernardo do Campo and Diadema, one could see his great leadership skills while forming the strikes. Lula never gave up trying to be president and it payed off. As president, Lula has accomplished many goals, and has focused on many social projects to help Brazil. Lula has received many awards for his achievements and was even named one of the most important people on earth. Lula has earned the right to be called a great politician. Greek Winter Solstice Celebrations in Honor of Poseidon
Greek Winter Solstice Celebrations in Honor of Poseidon Solstice (from the Latin sol sun) celebrations honor the sun. At the summer solstice in late June, there is no dearth of the sun, so celebrants just enjoy the extra hours of daylight, but by the winter solstice in late December, the days are much shorter as the sun sets earlier. Winter solstice celebrations often include two activities related to the failing sun: producing light and enjoying the cover the darkness provides. Thus, it is common for winter solstice celebrations to include candle lighting, bonfire creation, and drunken debauchery. Poseidon and the Winter Solstice In Greek mythology, the sea god Poseidon is one of the most lascivious of the gods, producing more children than many other gods. Greek calendars varied from polis to polis, but in some Greek calendars, a month around the time of the winter solstice is named for Poseidon. In Athens and other parts of ancient Greece, there is a month that roughly corresponds with December/January that is named Poseideon for the sea-god Poseidon. Despite the fact that the Greeks were the least likely to sail during these months, they held a celebration in Athens called Posidea to celebrate Poseidon. Haloea and Womens Rites At Eleusis there was a festival called Haloea on the 26th of the month Poseideon. The Haloea- a festival for Demeter and Dionysus- included a procession for Poseidon. The Haloea is thought to have been a time for merriment. There is mention of a womens rite in connection with this holiday: Women are provided with wine and food, including cakes in the shapes of sexual organs. They withdraw to themselves and exchange scurrilous banter, and are teased with suggestions of promiscuity whispered in their ears by the priestesses. [p.5] The women are thought to have stayed secluded throughout the night and then to have joined the men the next day. While the women were off eating, drinking, and sounding much like the women of Lysistrata, the men are thought to have created a big pyre or a bunch of little bonfires. Poseidonia of Aegina The Poseidonia of Aegina may have taken place in the same month. There were 16 days of feasting with rites of Aphrodite concluding the festival. Like the Roman festival of Saturnalia, the Poseidonia became so popular it was extended so that Athenaeus makes it 2 months long: In sum, the celebrants feast to satiety, then turn to lascivious teasing. What is the ritual purpose of such conduct? It obviously suits Poseidons mythical reputation as the most lustful of gods, who far surpasses Apollo and Zeus in the number of his liaisons and his offspring. Poseidon the seducer is god of springs and rivers[...] Source Poseidons Festival at the Winter Solstice, by Noel Robertson, The Classical Quarterly, New Series, Vol. 34, No. 1 (1984), 1-16.

Discourse On Method and Meditations On First Philosophy Essay
Discourse On Method and Meditations On First Philosophy - Essay Example At examining the difference between pure intellectual and imagination, he uses figures such as triangles, bound by three lines, chiliagon bound by thousands of sides and Pentagon. He points that the force of habit drives one to imagine something whenever one thinks of a corporeal thing. The new effort on the side of the mind that makes one imagine rather than need it to understand defines the difference between pure intellectual and imagination (Descartes, Weissman & Bluhm, 1996). The power of imagination differing from the power of understanding is not essential to an own essence. The power of imagination relies on something distinct from the person in question. Despite the existence of the body, it is by means of the characterââ¬â¢s body that brings an imagination of corporeal things. The mind, therefore, looks at the ideas that exist in it when it understands. While when it imagines, it reflects on the body and intuits something that conform to idea perceived by the sense or understood by the same mind. Therefore, an imagination is actualized in this manner if the body exists. Therefore, from a probability, the body exists (Descartes, Weissman & Bluhm, 1996). From the corporeal nature the object of pure mathematics, perception of things increases with means of senses. With the help of the memory, they appear to have reached the imagination. First, we sense that we have a head, feet, and other parts of the body. Pleasure and pain hunger enables sensing of appetites (Descartes, Weissman & Bluhm, 1996). One can also sense things found in the environment and use that basis to distinguish the earth, sky, and seas among others. The ideas from the mind are much vivid, explicit, and distinctive than those knowingly and deliberately formed through mediation or found within the memory. They all seem first not to come from own self. Therefore, the alternative was that they came from other things

Use of Skeleton Steel Frame Structure On New Factory Essay
Use of Skeleton Steel Frame Structure On New Factory - Essay Example The instance offers the advantage of treating wooden materials instead of the steel materials. As result, it avoids heavy expenses involved in building and construction process (Ward, 2008). Assemblage of steel materials is very efficient and faster since manufacturers of the materials design them in a manner that they just fix and join with each other. As result, it saves time of redesigning the joints for the materials. Unlike wooden materials used in building, steel materials have a high degree of accuracy. For instance, their edges once measured and cut according to the specifications wanted, do not always peel off unlike wood or plastic materials (Ward, 2008). Steel structures have their versatility feature that gives the architectures the choice to attain most of their objectives during building and construction process. For instance, steel forms an important building material in stadia, shopping structures, commercial buildings, steel cladding systems, landmark structures, and other possible areas that steel can provide the best option in constructing it (Ward, 2008). Since steel is strong and durable, it, in this case, emerges as one of the sustainable construction materials. It isalso possible to recycle steel materials and as a result making it enhances sustainability in building and construction (Ward, 2008). Steel structures also offer to the manufactures its choice of flexibility. In this case, steel becomes advantageous to manufacturers due its lightweight, open and the airy spaces. As a result, it makes possible for the steel to withstand disturbances with little costs incurred in its maintenance. Protection of steel against fire involves using the passive fire protection method. The method facilitates the insulation of the structures from the effects of high temperatures from the fire. However, passive method involves two types; on

Physics coursework Essay Example for Free
Physics coursework Essay To make it clearer, I need to provide some graphs to my report, which would show much clearer what is happening in the experiments. On the table I have written, snapped for the end result of each experiment. This literally means that the wire has snapped at this point. Unfortunately one of the experiments snapped before the other two, this information would prove to me that either the experiment was carried out differently, poorly, or just that the wire was in different conditions. Analysis Firstly a major factor that I investigated which I believed would affect the distance that the wire stretched, was the time period between applying weights. If I applied all the weights at the same time it would snap quickly and results that I would have received would have contradicted each other, by this I mean when each weight is added it wouldnt have enough time to stretch the wire to its full potential. To resolve this I applied the weight on a two minute time period, however considering that the first 70 or so Newtons didnt have much effect on the wire, I applied them at a slightly faster rate. The following table shows the relationship between the mass and distance stretched: As you can clearly see from the graph, the first 50 Newtons have no effect on the wire, between 50 180 Newtons little change is occurring, but from that point the wire is experiencing large amounts of strain. Small stress will cause the copper wire to stretch. Remove the stress and it returns to its original dimensions. This is known as elastic deformation. If the stress is increased too far and it passes the point of elastic deformation, the wire snaps. However at this point of elastic deformation the wire yields, from this point the wire begins to deform, this is now plastic deformation. The information that I now have enables me to calculate other such factors of the physics of the experiment. I can work out stress and strain levels, and then from that, the youngs modulus of the wire. The youngs modulus of the wire tells me how flexible or stretchy the wire is. Calculations: Stress = Load / (cross sectional area of the wire) Cross sectional area of the wire = pie x r (squared) Cross sectional area of the wire = 0. 1075mm(squared) Stress = x / 0. 1075 Strain = Extension / Original Length Strain = x / 300(cm) Youngs Modulus = Stress / Strain I can add the stress, strain and youngs modulus values to my table: Mass Distance (mm) (N) Exp 1 Exp 2 Exp 3 Average Strain Stress Youngs Modulusà Snapped Snapped. The information I have received from the table will then enable me to provide the conclusion with such arguments as youngs modulus graphs: The stress-strain graph for the copper wire is pretty much a straight line, up to the point where it fractures. At the point where it fractures the wire experiences plastic deformation this is when the wire cannot be shaped back into its original counterpart. To show the stress and strain levels acting on the wire most effectively it would be clearer to draw a graph: The graph above shows the elastic region, the plastic region (extension uniform along length) and the plastic region (necking has begun). Conclusion From these results and the way that I have interpreted them I can conclude that the wire behaves to the weight applied to it, in firstly an elastic behavior pattern, then finally in a plastic behavior pattern, depending on how much weight is applied. The more weight applied to the wire, the closer it gets to plastic behavior and eventually snapping. Therefore stress and strain levels upon the wire at these points are behaving differently resulting in a youngs modulus graph, which proves the elastic/plastic behavior patterns. Some of the results that were recorded may have been affected by human errors such as applying the weights drastically and measuring the distances that wire has stretched incorrectly, but however carrying out the experiment in great detail would take large amounts of time, which would not enable me to compile three experiments and an average. Ways that my experiment could have been improved: if a weight applying mechanism were used, it would prevent the weights causing noticeable differences to the distance that the wire has stretched. Another problem, which I experienced with the weights, was the fact that more than one slotted mass hook to be applied to the wire. If a device was prepared so that weights were added to the slotted mass alternately to prevent handling the weight to apply the mass. If I were to carry out the experiment again, I would use a thinner wire, or one with a lower tensile strength. This would mean that less weight is to be applied to the wire. I would do this because if you look back at my results the first 60 or 70 Newtons dont affect the wire at all. If the wire is going to snap sooner, it will mean that the wire will stretch less. First Impressions :: essays research papers
à à à à à I can remember the first time that Iââ¬â¢ve ever met a white person before. My first time was in sixth grade when I went to Academy school in Glastonbury. Sure Iââ¬â¢d seen them in movies, at the stores, and maybe I had a white teacher, but the first time Iââ¬â¢d ever interacted with a white person was that year. à à à à à I was an exceptional student then. Too smart for my grade they said. My English teacher in 5th grade, Mrs. Wimberly, told me I needed to get out of the Hartford Public School system. She suggested to my mother that I try out a program called Project Concern. This was a program that brought inner city youth out into suburban schools so as to give equal opportunities for education. à à à à à My mother applied to this and was informed before the end of my fifth grade school year that I was accepted and would be going to school in Glastonbury. Glastonbury!? Where the heck was that? I didnââ¬â¢t even know such a place existed in my small little world. The farthest Iââ¬â¢d ever been was East Hartford or maybe the Westfarms mall, and I just saw those as extensions of Hartford. I was a little worried as to what this experience was going to be like. à à à à à I told everyone at Annie Fisher, my elementary school in Hartford, the news at the lunch table one day. While unwrapping my lunch from those plastic cases, and opening my carton of low-fat milk I broke the news. Some of the girls at the table began to say, ââ¬Å"Oh weââ¬â¢re gonna miss you Chancellor!â⬠Then the guys chimed in. My one friend, Barry, informed me that I was going to a mostly white school only he put it in other terms, ââ¬Å"Ha ha, youââ¬â¢re going to be going to school with a bunch of crackers!â⬠Iââ¬â¢d never heard the term before, but another kid chimed in through mouthfuls of his dry salami sandwich, ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re going to a white school!?â⬠à à à à à I was a bit confused. What was this? I was never told Iââ¬â¢d be going to school with white people. Iââ¬â¢d never in talked to a white person before. They seem like some abstract, far off idea that I could not yet comprehend. I began to get nervous sitting at that lunch table, with my feet sticking to the dried juice on the floor. I asked them, ââ¬Å"What are they like?

Machiavelli
In the beginning of The Prince, Machiavelli outlines the different types of principalities which constitute all forms of government.à He then goes on to give advice on how a competent ruler would go about keeping a stronghold in the principality he had just conquered.à Although perhaps not as blatant as other political leadersââ¬â¢ attempts at gaining control after an invasion of a country, George Bush, taking action in 2003, decided to firmly plant an America influence in Iraq. ââ¬Å"The Decider,â⬠as the President recently referred to himself, chose a path which has clear parallels to situations outlined in The Prince.à Within the pages of The Prince, Machiavelli has given much advice as to how to deal with the current situation in which the President now finds himself.à Leaving out ethical consideration of the actions our President has taken and must take in the future, this paper will explore the relationship between the teachings found in The Prince and the current situation in Iraq and attempt to answer the question of what advice Machiavelli would give to President Bush to ease his current situation. In the beginning of The Prince, Machiavelli claims that all governments are either republics or principalities.à As he has already laid out what constitutes a republic, The Prince is concerned with only principalities.à As he explains, there are three different types of principalities; hereditary, new, and mixed. A hereditary principality is the sort that is passed from ruler to ruler in the same family.à It is the typical monarchial relationship in which a king, once no longer able to rule, passes his kingdom over to the next in line, usually his son.à New principalities are entirely new territories to be ruled over, and mixed principalities are new additions to existing territories.à It is this last kind of principality that this paper will be concerned with as it is most readily illustrated with the current situation in Iraq. To understand the relationship between Machiavelliââ¬â¢s ideas and what the Bush administration is currently involved in in the war there, it is necessary to understand the recent history of Iraq. Iraq was formed from three former Ottoman regions; Basra, Baghdad, and Mosul.à à It was given to the United Kingdom at the end of World War I as a mandate.à The United Kingdom granted Iraq independence in 1932 but invaded in 1941 when it seemed that the government there was threatening European oil supplies.à The U.K then occupied the country for several years and installed a monarchy to rule the region. This monarchy lasted until a coup dââ¬â¢etat led by the Iraqi army overthrew it in 1958.à After this government was itself overthrown, the Iraqi Baââ¬â¢ath party gained control and out of this rose Saddam Hussein.à Hussein ruled Iraq until removed from power by the United States in 2003.à (Wikipedia 2006) Although perhaps in the eyes of Hussein, Iraq could be considered a monarchy, it was more often considered a dictatorship.à And because when the United States invaded Iraq they were not invading a new territory, Iraq as a principality would, by Machiavellian standards, be considered not a hereditary or new principality, but mixed.à It is these sorts of principalities that, in Machiavelliââ¬â¢s words, ââ¬Å"â⬠¦are the ones that present problems.â⬠Aside from the hereditary principalities, in which the people of the territory do not, as evidenced by their loyalty to the Kingââ¬â¢s family, mind the change in power, a mixed principality, because the people have been under the rule of one man (as in the case of Iraq), will not take well to the new ruler unless their situation improves.à Machiavelliââ¬â¢s musings on human nature bring out the idea that all people are generally looking out for themselves and those close to them. They are generally indifferent to politics when things are going well for themselves.à For this reason, if the peopleââ¬â¢s situation improves even a small amount and provides them the feeling of safety and security, it will not really matter to them who is in control.à As evidenced by the daily insurgent attacks, kidnappings and suicide bombings, President Bush has not created a feeling of security for the people of Iraq.à Is it any wonder that the vast majority of the Iraqiââ¬â¢s do not want us there?à President Bush has failed to accomplish even this first goal of competent rule laid out by Machiavelli. In The Prince, Machiavelli uses the analogy of rulers being like foxes and lions to prove a point about what constitutes a competent ruler. He mentions this in Chapter Eighteen: How Rulers Are to Keep Their Word.à As he states, ââ¬Å"Everybody recognizes how praiseworthy it is for a ruler to keep his world and to live a life of integrity, without relying on craftiness.à Nevertheless, we see that in practiceâ⬠¦ those rulers who have not thought it important to keep their word have achieved great thingsâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ For this reason, Machiavelli believes it important to be able to rule and fight in two ways.à The first, the way men fight; by the rules.à The second is the way animals fight; no holds barred.à ââ¬Å"Because you cannot always win when you respect the rules, you must be prepared to break them.à A ruler needs to know how to be both an animal and a man.â⬠In Machiavelliââ¬â¢s view, because a ruler must at times display ââ¬Å"beastlyâ⬠qualities, it is important to know how to act like specific animals, namely, a lion and a fox.à The lion is powerful, and runs over his enemies with great mite, but has the disadvantage of not being able to avoid traps.à The fox, on the other hand, has the cunning to avoid those traps.à So it is important for the ruler to be able to act like both animals and to know when the situation calls for either brute strength, or quiet cunning. Although many people often make fun of the President, regarding him as not too bright, he did sell a war to the American people and the world based on lies.à As recently reported by Reuters, the White House had been informed by the CIA six months previous to the invasion of Iraq that there were no weapons of mass destruction.à This, along with countless other officials and documents have shown that the Bush administration knew what all of us know now; that Iraq was in no way the threat they were perceived to be. Of course, there was no way for him at the time to know that the world would find out that he was not telling to truth and if there was, maybe he would not have used the rationale of weapons of mass destruction but found another way to get enough support to invade Iraq.à Nevertheless, he was cunning enough to know when to use fear and manipulation to rally the people behind him and achieved his aims with the help of many countries. In Machiavelliââ¬â¢s time, there would not have been governmental leaks to the extent that we have today, and anyone courageous enough to speak out about ruling governments were more than likely going to be killed.à If Bush were ruling with circumstances similar to what they were in Italy in the time of Machiavelli, perhaps he would have been more successful. However, now that Bush finds himself in the position that he is in, the question could be asked what advice might Machiavelli give to our President.à The answer to this question lies in chapter five of The Prince: How You Should Govern Cities or Kingdoms That, Before You Acquired Them, Lived Under Their Own Laws.à As Machiavelli explains, ââ¬Å"When the states one acquires by conquest are accustomed to living under their own laws and in freedom, there are three policies one can follow in order to hold on to them.â⬠à Although it could be debated whether Iraq was ââ¬Å"freeâ⬠the overall meaning of Machiavelli still applies. ââ¬Å"The first is to lay them to waste.â⬠à With the advent of the international criminal court and the necessity of keeping the peace and favor of ones allies, President Bush could not view this first option as possible.à ââ¬Å"The second is to go and live there in person.â⬠à I highly doubt President Bush has, or ever will consider such a measure. And, ââ¬Å"The third is to let them continue to live under their own laws, make them pay you, and create there an administrative and political elite who will remain loyal to you.â⬠This third option is the one the Bush administration is following. à à Although the Iraqiââ¬â¢s are not paying taxes directly to the United States, once the infrastructure gets up and running again, I am certain we will take our payment in the form of oil. If someone from old Italy were familiar with Machiavelli and his works and were alive today, they would see much Machiavellian inspiration in the governmental tactics of the Bush administration.à Whether President Bush is aware of it or not, he is giving us a first hand account of what happens when Machiavellian principles are followed.à The interesting fact is that it seems these principles would only work today if the circumstances were just right. Nevertheless, many of Bushââ¬â¢s detractors would probably like to see him carry certain of Machiavelliââ¬â¢s ideas to a different level, namely the second option of ruling a newly acquired kingdom; move there. Creon and Antigone â⬠Victims of Fate Essay
Sophocles put a lot of layers of meaning in his Creon and Antigone. For ancient Greeks these great tragedies were not only an entertainment, but they also possessed a lot of philosophical meaning which made people think about many different problems. When reading Sophoclesââ¬â¢ play Antigone we get into a difficult life situation together with main characters, think about their choices and possible consequences of their mistakes. We can see two different systems of beliefs, two different worlds presented by two main characters ââ¬â Creon and Antigone. Creon is a carrier of the state power; he expresses obedience to his fate and obedience to the state laws. He is driven by the burden of responsibilities put on him by his high position. We see that he is ready to forget about his feelings and emotions in order to perform his duties. ââ¬Å"Kings, my girl, have other things to do than to surrender themselves to their private feelingsâ⬠he says to Antigone during their talk (Sophocles 42). He can not influence his destiny and it seems that everything is predetermined for him. Antigone is a complete antipode of Creon. She is lively, impulsive, enthusiastic and counts on her feelings and emotions. She can break the limits of the state laws and even does not feel guilty for that. ââ¬Å"I didnââ¬â¢t say ââ¬Å"yesâ⬠. I can say no to anything I think vile, and I donââ¬â¢t have to count the cost. But because you said yes, all that you can do, for all your crown and trappings, and your guards- all that you can do is to have me killedâ⬠(Sophocles 45). She is driven by completely different motives and her inner truth is more important to her than formal laws and regulations. She makes decisions, which determine her fate. She influences her own life and people around her. Antigone seems free and determine. She makes her decisions and is ready to take responsibility for them. We can find a lot of things, which unite them if we look deeper than just on the surface of the play. Creon and Antigone do not seem so different if we study their personalities better. They both are stubborn; they both are directed by their goals and do not want to step aside. They have different values and look for different things in life but both are ready to sacrifice their lives for the sake of these values. Creon recognizes himself in young and passionate Antigone. ââ¬Å"Donââ¬â¢t think me fatuous if I say that I understand you; and that at your age I should have done the same thing. A moment ago, when we were quarreling, you said I was drinking in your words. I was. But it wasnââ¬â¢t you I was listening to; it was a lad named Creonâ⬠¦he was thin and pale, as you are. His mind too was filled with thoughts of self-sacrificeâ⬠(Sophocles 50). He knows that they are alike, were alike if to be precise. But the burden of state responsibilities has changed his thoughts and deadened his feelings. His ideals were replaced by the obedience to laws and higher power. Like in the most Greek tragedies Creon is dependant on the will of whimsical gods and has little choice. The only his choice is whether to follow his destination or not. Creon makes his choice and obediently follows his fate. Antigone challenges not only social norms, but also her own destiny and will of gods. Antigone easily breaks with her beloved sister when she refuses to help her. She does not forgive her even when Ismene comes to prison and wants to share Antigoneââ¬â¢s guilt. The same thing does Creon, when refuses to listen to the advice of his old and loyal friend Polyneices. Both, Antigone and Creon could sacrifice their dear people and just forget about them in the fight for their ideals. Both, Creon and Antigone have their own moral standards and live according to them. Works Cited Sophocles: The Complete Greek Tragedies. Edited by David Grene. 2 vols. The reason Sainsbury needs to controls its cost properly is that it would save its money by having the right number of staff then Sainsbury would benefit as they would have cash available to pay for other expenses in the business. The reason Sainsbury needs to controls its cost properly is that it doesnt go over the budget which has been set by the company It is very significant for an organisation like Sainsbury to control its debtors properly and effectively then this would mean that the company would get its money owed paid back quickly and this would aid the company by having it money back from it debtors. This would mean that the company would have money available to pay it creditors and purchase stock. It is essential for Sainsbury to control its budget has it helps the business to determine whether they have enough money to fund operations, expand the business and generate profit. It is essential for Sainsbury to control its budget so that it has finances for the period of the budget. The budget will help Sainsbury reach targets and goals. It would also help to create motivation among the teams by having a plan this will help the company improves its overall performance. Most importantly it would help them to monitor and compare the performance against the budget which is the budget variance On the other hand, if Sainsbury do not manage its costs and budget properly and effectively then this would cause the company a decrease in its profits. The company might even end up in a situation where it cant pay for its expenses no more and this would lead the business to shut down. If Sainsbury do not control its cost and budget properly then this would mean that the company would purchase too much stock and the stock be held in the stockroom. This would then mean that the value of the stock would decrease. As a result this would increase the cost of the company expenses. Also this would mean that the company would be wasting money in a non beneficial area so if the company wanted to use the money in another area it wouldnt be able. Then again, if Sainsbury do not manage its costs and budget properly then this would mean that the company would not be collecting the money owed back in time to pay for their expenses and stock. So therefore this would mean that Sainsbury will have to borrow money in order to pay it s creditors and stock. As a result, this means that Sainsbury will have to pay interest in the money which they borrowed and will end up paying more money. If Sainsbury doesnt control its cost and budget properly then it wouldnt manage to assess and evaluate its finances. Also if Sainsbury doesnt manage to control its budget then it would find it difficult to reach its objectives and targets. Furthermore the staff wouldnt feel motivated as they wont have any real and obvious targets to reach. If a Sainsbury doesnt control its cost and budget then it runs the risk of spending more money than it is taking in or, even, not spending enough money to expand the business and compete. The problems which can arise if the costs are left unmonitored are that spending might be more than what is available. It is important for a company like Sainsbury to maximise income and minimise it expense. The other problems which can arise if the costs are left unmonitored are that the amount spend on overheads will be too much and this will decrease the profits which the business makes. In addition to that, the other problems which can arise if the budgets are left unmonitored are the targets may not be achieved so therefore it may be difficult to identify what was the cause. It will be difficult for neither Sainsbury to implement changes if the performances are nor being monitored. If the management are not aware of where the business is going therefore they may not use resources adequately. Furthermore another problem will be that too much stock may bought and this would mean that the stock would be left in the stock room and then when the stock goes out of fashion then the business will have to put discount on the stock. So therefore they will lose money on those clothes. Another problem which can arise is that the company the company may not keep track of they debtors and this means that the debtors are not paying on time. So therefore they might find it difficult to pay it creditors and might even need to borrow some money to purchase stock and the company will make a loss as they would have to pay an interest on the money borrowed.

Medical Billing Changes Create a Whole New World of Jobs
Medical Billing Changes Create a Whole New World of Jobs Physiciansââ¬â¢ offices and hospitals are introducing many changes in the ways they bill insurance. The need for individuals skilled in this venue has increased, and is expected to continue growing. Letââ¬â¢s take a look atà why this is happening and what it means for youà if you are interested in pursuing this career. What is ICD-10?Understanding what the latest International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) entails is complex. It replaces the ICD-9 system that has been in use for years. Both systems code for a particular disease, along with modifiers for identification and billing purposes. The ICD-10 system lists more than 140,000 codes used for diagnosis, treatment, andà procedures. Some codes are detailed, and finding the right code might be difficult. Doctors, already burdened by a complicated health care system, may find it difficult to easily find the right code. If the correct code remains unfound, the cost may revert back to the patient. Hiring individuals tr ained in this new system is important to making it run smoothly. The codes are based on an official list originating with the World Health Organization. It is not dependent on a particular health care plan and has no link to the incorporation of the Affordable Care Act in the United States.Readiness for the new ICD-10 implementationPhysician readiness for using the new system is lacking, according to the Workgroup for Electronic Data Interchange or WEDI. About 25 percent of physicians are not going to be ready, and possibly an additional 25 percent will not be acclimated. This may cause delays in using the new ICD-10 system, and many providers are looking to hire those trained in the new system. Why is ICD-10 so difficult?Part of the problem with the new coding is precision. While this might sound oversimplified or at odds with the delicate balance found in proper billing, it isnââ¬â¢t. For example, there are aboutà 18 codes for a patient who ate a toxic mushroom thatà adequate ly describe the patientââ¬â¢s medicalà situation. Another example: looking at a fractured leg and properly coding it may mean choosing amongà dozens of codes to find the right one.Theà ICD-10 coding employs more than 70,000 diagnostic codes, compared with 15,000 in ICD-9. Procedures done in the hospital will rise from 4,000 to 72,000. The transition from the old system and the sheer number of increased codes mean that both office and hospital billing will need peopleà trained in ICD-10.Increased training for ICD-10Some schools have increased the amount of training for coding based on the new guidelines by providing ICD-10 courses. Those taking refresher courses are poised to take advantage of the need for billing personnel. Hospitals, health insurance plans, and physician and other health care professional offices will have a need for this skill. In addition, the work will become more demanding, and medical professionals who work with coding will beà expected to pass a certification exam.More job opportunities in 2016 for medical billingvia GIPHYJobs in medical coding are expected to increase by 18 percent through 2016, according to the Department of Labor. Due to demand, experts believe many positions will be based on a 40-hour workweek with overtime. Salaries will range between $23,000 and $43,000 based on experience, geographical area, and whether the job is in a hospital or office.Finding the right medical billing job as well as other healthcare jobs depends on having a way to finding positions right for you. Case study on the design of a contemporary Civil Engineering project Essay - 1
Case study on the design of a contemporary Civil Engineering project - Essay Example The bridge is a natural expression of structural engineering and architecture but a city center footbridge is equally about people and the environment; in short a piece of public architecture. The bridge gives the pedestrians unique views of London, free from traffic and high above the Thames. In September 1996, a competition was organized by a London-based newspaper the Financial Times and London Borough of Southwark to design a new Footbridge across the River Thames. The idea behind the competition was to get the best design in every aspect therefore the teams participating in the design were structured to have an engineer, an architect and an artist. More than 200 teams participated and the competition was won by Arup (engineer), Foster (architect) and Sir Anthony Caro (Sculptor). The height restrictions and the view behind the bridge required an innovative design which was provided in the form of a design which included some unusual practices; the suspension design had supporting cables below the deck level. This innovative design was given the name ââ¬Ëblade of lightââ¬â¢ by its designers. The structure of the Millennium Bridge is innovative and complex but it has been designed to achieve an apparent simple form. The design of the Millennium Bridge is based on the following considerations: An evolved support system in which the majority of the bridge stiffness is created by shallow cable profile derived tension. This allows a light bridge deck structure. A modular design in which several structural members and components can be repeated in the structure, thus reducing the fabrication costs. This can also simplify the maintenance after the construction and allows easy execution of the construction phase. The distribution of the forces on the foundations should be such that they do not disturb the existing structures on the north bank and also the foundations of the existing bridges. The aesthetics of the bridge at night were also a big concern and a l ight pipe system illumination was proposed to create a ââ¬Ëblade of lightââ¬â¢ across the river at night. The river traffic analysis is also important while designing a bridge at such a location. A major issue was the provision of planning advice for gaining the necessary approvals to construct a new river crossing in the heart of London. Moreover ways of generating the finances for the bridge were also to be considered while designing the bridge. Superstructure Design The bridge design is a shallow suspension bridge in which the view behind the bridge is facilitated by keeping the suspension cables below the bridge deck. The bridge is supported on two river piers through two groups of four 120mm diameter locked coil cables which span from one bank to the other. The three spans of the bridge have different lengths. The middle span which lies between the two piers is 144m long. The north span is 81m long while the south span is 108m in length. Fabricated steel box sections whic h are known as the transverse arms span between the two
